This lecture note outlines the natural mechanisms that produce and maintain tree genetic diversity, covering both the sources of the variation and the mechanisms that allow it to be passed on and selected. Tree improvement is also outlined and briefly described. It is useful for providing a quick theoretical overview to tree improvement practitioners and others.
